Magazine Project Genre Research- National Review

The National Review is an American semi-monthly conservative editorial magazine focusing on news and commentary pieces on political, social, and cultural affairs. The magazine was founded by the author William F. Buckley Jr. in 1955. The release pieces digitally on their website daily. The cover layout of their magazines shows great ties to the main overall issue that with be addressed with articles. In this particular release, it was about American jobs and power/energy and how we get and use it. The image shown on the magazine is a oil pump acquiring the "main American power: oil."  Articles that appear in the magazine and online include Atheism as a Bad Religion, The Ugly Departure of Max Boot, and Hilary Clinton is right and wrong about immigration and populism. Awards won are unknown and hard to find. 

Magazine Project Genre Research- The Jerusalem Report

 The Jerusalem Report is a fortnightly print and online news magazine that covers political, economic, social and cultural issues in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. The cover layout is a large cartoonist image of Albert Einstein and the main headlining article "The promise of Jewish genius." The image of Einstein is very colorful and shows the two sides of the genius in a way. The blue representing his beliefs in science, and the normal skin tone side representing his faith as a Jewish man. The two things shows his promise and contribution to society. The magazine releases print very rarely, four times annually but do release articles online daily. The advertisements that appear on the website are mainly religious ads, medicinal/ pharmaceutical ads, and insurance/ travelling ads. The main articles shown in print and digital are pieces such as Ivanka Trumps email vs Clinton emails, Hamas, Israel/ Palestinian conflict, Green Israel, Diaspora, and the top 50 most influential Jews. The Jerusalem Report has not received many awards since they are not well circulated in the US, and mainly just in Jewish American communities and in the Middle East. However, they do grant awards to Jewish citizens and writers alike. 

Magazine Project Genre Research- The Spectator

The Spectator is a weekly British magazine on politics, culture, and current affairs. It was first published in July 1828.. Its principal subject areas are politics and culture. on its website, mainly features, and in six print issues annually. It produces content weekly online and print weekly. The cover layout of their current print magazine, Winter 2018 is exemplary. The cover shows British prime minister Theresa May shoes "stepping on the democracy of the British government." The current issue is based off Theresa's May Brexit deal, bloodshed caused by leaving the EU, Democrats obsession with Beto, Socrates vs. Steve Bannon, and what kills penguins. The Spectator has been nominated for many awards, most are covert but the most commonly known one is the "Economic Disruptor of the Year."

Magazine Project Genre Research- Foreign Policy

 Foreign Policy is a American news publication, founded in 1970 and focused on global affairs, current events, and domestic and international policy. It produces content daily on its website, and in six print issues annually. The cover layout of their print magazine current Fall 2018 is exemplary. The cover colors are black and white in the war torn and bullet riddled background and the one soldier, who is on a laptop, which represents "cyber war" is glowing blue. The current issue being used is "The Future of War", in this issue they are outlining issues with the Taliban/Kabul's' U.S. backed administration, cyber-war, cyber mercenaries, the arctic melting, and the pentagon/silicon valley working together. The advertisements that appear are mainly pharmaceutical drugs. podcast ads, and political ads. The type of photos that appear are pictures of people that live in war zones, political leaders, and photos regarding the article itself, ex: Palestinians living near the West Bank living conditions- a photo of a Palestinians family's house. The distribution of Foreign Policy is 6 print annually, and unlimited online articles on their website. Foreign Policy is a award winning magazine. They have been nominated for  The Foreign Policy Association Medal, Corporate Social Responsibility Award, Global Philanthropy Award, The International Business Leader Award, and The Statesman Award. 

Project Selection- My Decision

For the AICE Media Studies project, I chose to do a independent special-interest, political/ op-ed magazine. The magazine will be based on young perspectives on politics today. This will be classified under the category politics/government. This genre would flaunt my organisational and imaginative political journalism skills. I will be working alone and making this project independent. To describe my project, I will be using three main people, all friends of mine, all high school students. They all will be interviewed, along with photographed so the reader has a visual of who is being interviewed and giving their perspective. The interviews will focus on what they feel, as young adults, they politically agree or disagree with. Also how hard they have to work to have their opinion heard in politics. And if their opinion should be heard at all.

Project Selection- Film

For the AICE Media Studies project, the film project for me is what I would be least likely to do. Aspects of film production that interest me are the directing skills and the creative writing and the organizational capacity being used. However, my creative skills in art and music are very hum drum and not the most imaginative as some. The more logical and "left- brain" of film production are what interest me more than the majority of creative visualization. Those aspects are the most alluring facet of film production. In the AICE Media Studies, when the class watched The Newsroom and Ferris Bueller, my interest spiked in film production. Challenges for me would be most creative parts of filming such as finding aesthetic clothing and ideas for the cast and crew to act out and set up. The organizational and creative writing skills plus my commanding but not overbearing personality would help me with doing the film production as my AICE Media Studies project.

Project Selection - Magazine

For the AICE Media Studies project, the magazine project can show my broadened favorable view of print journalism that has been influenced by the AICE Media Studies curriculum. By watching All the Presidents Men and The Newsroom and doing magazine analysis's, my interest in journalism increased. Seeing the Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein use their print journalism and inference skills and having a hands- on, socializing with people, writing type job are some of the aspects of a interest I enjoy, which is print journalism. The Newsroom also increased my interest due to the feel of the office and the work that the characters did. I personally love writing and after taking 3 years of Journalism in my school career, I'd like to think that my writing is exemplary. These are the reasons why the magazine project is a good fit for me. It will challenge my writing skills and will expand my knowledge in print journalism and marketing skills of my magazine, which can be good for a future career choice.
